Walking in the Rain

Paris Street, Rainy Day, 1877 by Gustave Caillebotte.

An all time favorite of mine and a lot of visitors to the Art Institute of Chicago. I think it is probably the familiarity of the scene even if it is almost 150 years before today, a rainy street is a rainy street.

Intolerance

Daughters_of_Revolution.jpg

Daughters of the Revolution by Grant Wood, Cincinnati Art Museum.

Wood pokes fun at the prim and proper ladies and their intolerance. This is the only "satire" Wood owned up to, but many of his other works fit that definition too, even the beloved American Gothic.

Beata Beatrix, 1872 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, The Art Institute of Chicago.

This is a portrait of Rossetti's wife Elizabeth Siddal that was painted after her death. In it he casts her as Dante's Beatrice, thereby casting himself as his namesake. When Siddal died he was so overcome with grief he buried his manuscript book of poetry along with her (five years later he retrieved it).

Nighthawks, 1942 by Edward Hopper, The Art Institute of Chicago.

One of the most popular paintings in the AIC's collection people are intrigued by the familiar scene and the loneliness Hopper captures.

Georges-Seurat.jpg

Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grand Jatte by Georges Seurat, Art Institute of Chicago.

Seurat did preparatory drawings everyday for six months getting ready to paint this picture of people relaxing on a day off. The style is called Pointillism and involves using color dots to create the image. Who knows how Seurat would have refined the style he invented if he had not died at the age of 32.

Love you, Mom!
