Dawn by Odd Nerdrum.
When I was working at the Joslyn Art Museum in the 1991 I saw the work of Odd Nerdrum for the first time and was struck at how it seemed old and new at the same time. I recognized references to artists of the Northern school and Caravaggio, but it was also so contemporary as art seemed to be moving toward a return to Realism.

Karl Bodmer traveled with Prince Maximilian of Wiedneuwied as he explored the Missouri river. Bodmer was in charge of capturing images of the new and wonderful people, animals and places they encountered.

One of Pollock's earliest "drip" paintings this work incorporated house paint and automobile paint mixed with sand and ashes.

This work by another American artist who studied and had great success in Europe as well as in the US, was originally entitled The Tiff by the artist. That title gives us a little more insight into what is going on between the man and the woman peeking over the edge of the hammock.
