Washstand, 1904 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
This beautiful washstand was designed as part of the furnishings for a house he designed called Hill House. The owner of the house also owned a series of tea rooms that were designed by Mackintosh and company.

Here is an example of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's architectural and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh’s design work. His wife worked with him on his interior designs. Charles, Margaret, her sister Frances and Herbert MacNair all formed a design group known as "The Four."

Mackintosh's interest in plants began at a young age and continued throughout his life. Although he is most famous as an architect, his talent in painting watercolors should also be appreciated.

Dated 1840 and inscribed 'EDFOU, UPPER EGYPT' Roberts painted watercolors of ruins in Egypt and reproduced them as lithographs and sold them in London to disciples of the Grand Tour.

In the last four years of his life Mackintosh left Scotland for France. Although he painted some beautiful watercolors of the area he is not well known there. Exhibitions of his work, including his architecture and furniture designs, have been organized to show the people of the area the work of the architect/artist/designer who lived in their town.

Mackintosh's most famous private residence is Hill House. The style is a combination of Art & Crafts, Art Nouveau and old Scottish manor. It was built for Walter Blackie, a Glasgow publisher. Mackintosh designed the entire thing including furnishings, outbuildings, lawn decorations, lighting, etc.
Kitaj was born in Cleveland, but lives and works mostly in England. This chaotic piece portrays the gates at Auschwitz and references T.S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land.

My favorite artist. He was also an amazing architect. He was so far ahead of his time and although he was a contemporary of the Art & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, his take on the aesthetic was really unique.
