Dromos, or outer Court of the Great Temple at Edfou in Upper Egypt by David Roberts, RA 1796-1864
Dated 1840 and inscribed 'EDFOU, UPPER EGYPT' Roberts painted watercolors of ruins in Egypt and reproduced them as lithographs and sold them in London to disciples of the Grand Tour.

In the last four years of his life Mackintosh left Scotland for France. Although he painted some beautiful watercolors of the area he is not well known there. Exhibitions of his work, including his architecture and furniture designs, have been organized to show the people of the area the work of the architect/artist/designer who lived in their town.

The simple setting of this watercolor work is unusual and it has more in common with a photograph than a painting. It reflects the influence of the British on India in it's more austere setting and pose.

This C.R. Mackintosh watercolor was done after he had arrived in the south of France on the Mediterranean coast where he was struck by the natural rock formations and sets them up in this painting as a contrast to the roofs of the buildings.

Martha Walter (1875-1976) was a student of William Merritt Chase at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and later became a teacher at the New York School of Art, run by Chase. She developed her own loose style and preferred work in the Plein-Air technique.
